About Mr. Matchbook

This matchbook collection was started by my father, Nick Vedros, a photographer and avid collector from Kansas City, Missouri. My mother sent them to me as a source of inspiration while studying at Parsons School of Design. It wasn’t until I (Meryl Vedros) started working at Mucca Design in SoHo that my boss Matteo (a renowned type designer and graphic artist) recommended I start a website to display them. Colleague and interactive director Courtney Heffernan graciously helped coding a site template for MUCCA that provided a perfect solution to showcase the collection. Voila! MisterMatchbook was born

These matchbooks are unique time capsules reflective of a past characterized by contradiction, naivety, and male dominance. Most of the covers come from the 1940’s-1950’s Midwest during the Golden Era – a time when matchbooks were used by a smoking population of 186,570,887 people (almost 70% of the U.S. population, majority of smokers men). MORE TO COME, IN PROGRESS
